Modbus-RTU is a serial communications protocol originally developed for use with programmable logic controllers (PLCs). It is a simple and robust protocol, considered a de facto standard communication protocol, and is a commonly available means of connecting electronic devices on the factory floor. Modbus is often used to connect supervisory computers with remote terminal units (RTUs) in supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems.
Main advantages for the use of Modbus-RTU in the industrial environment are:
Modbus-RTU devices are easy to deploy and maintain;
Protocol is openly published and royalty-free;
I/O data consists of raw bits or words, with very limited restrictions.
AMCI offers encoders, stepper drives and other products with Modbus-RTU connectivity.
